What Is a Residence Permit?

A residence permit refers to the authorization document obtained by a foreigner to stay in Turkey. Foreigners who will stay longer than the period granted by a visa or visa exemption, or longer than 90 days, are required to apply through the e-residence system. After the application is completed, the applicant must be present at the Immigration Administration office of their province on the appointment date.

Residence Permit Types

Short Term

Max. 2 years (renewable)

This is the most flexible residence permit type that can be granted for tourism, trade, medical treatment, Turkish language courses, in-service training, student exchange programs, and many other purposes.

Family Residence Permit

Cannot exceed the sponsor's duration

This residence permit is granted to the spouse, minor children, and dependent adult children of a Turkish citizen or a foreigner holding a residence/work permit.

Important conditions:

Health insurance covering all family members
Income certificate above minimum wage
Marriage certificate or certified document
Children can benefit from the right to education

Student Residence Permit

Duration of studies

This residence permit is granted to foreigners studying in higher education programs (associate degree, bachelor's, master's, doctorate) in Turkey.

Points to note:

Not granted for private/distance education
New permit required when transferring to a different province
Right to work begins after the first year
Health insurance is automatic within 3 months of enrollment

Long Term Residence

Issued indefinitely

This indefinite residence permit is granted to foreigners who have stayed in Turkey continuously for at least 8 years with a residence permit. It provides rights close to those granted to Turkish citizens.

Granted rights:

Indefinite right to reside
Right to work and education
Social security and healthcare services
Right to request a travel document

Humanitarian Residence Permit

Granted under special conditions

This residence permit is granted by the governor's decision without standard requirements in cases involving the best interest of children, inability to carry out deportation, or humanitarian situations requiring stay in Turkey.

Typical situations:

Cases where deportation cannot be carried out
Protection of children
Granted by the governor's decision

Human Trafficking Victim

30 days + up to 3 years

This is a protective residence permit granted to persons who are identified or suspected as human trafficking victims, to facilitate their recovery and provide testimony.

Features:

Initially issued for 30 days
Renewable for up to 3 years in total
Right to benefit from support services

Application Process

How to apply step by step through the e-Residence system?

Online Application

Select the appropriate permit type at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr.

Schedule an Appointment

Note the appointment date assigned by the system. Unexcused absence invalidates the application.

Prepare Your Documents

Prepare your passport, photographs, health insurance, and permit-type-specific documents completely.

Visit the Office

Apply at your province's Immigration Administration office. The result is communicated within a maximum of 90 days.

Taken within the last 6 months, compliant with biometric standards

Private health insurance or SGK certificate; valid for the entire residence period

Bank statement, income certificate, or similar

Signed form obtained through the e-Residence system

Renewal Application

You must submit your renewal application 60 days before your residence permit expires. Days spent with an expired permit are considered a violation.

Address Change

When your address changes, you are required to notify the relevant Immigration Administration office within 20 business days.

Work Permit = Residence Permit

If you hold a valid work permit, you do not need to obtain a separate residence permit. The work permit serves as a residence permit.

When should the residence permit application be made?

You must apply through the e-Residence system before the period granted by your visa or visa exemption expires from the date of your entry to Turkey, or before exceeding 90 days. In case of delay, legal violations and penalties may apply.

Which health insurance is accepted?

Private health insurance, SGK certificate under bilateral social security agreements, SGK provision certificate, or General Health Insurance application document are accepted. The insurance must cover the entire duration of the residence permit.

What happens if I miss my appointment?

Those who do not appear on their appointment date without providing a valid excuse are considered to have never applied. In this case, you may have exceeded your legal stay period; penalties may be imposed upon departure.

Can I work with a student residence permit?

Yes, but obtaining a work permit is mandatory. For associate degree and bachelor's students, this right begins after the first year. Master's and doctoral students can apply from the registration period onwards.

What happens if I apply with incomplete documents?

You may be given up to 30 days of additional time by the administration to complete your missing documents. If the documents are not completed within this period, your application will be dismissed.

How can I transition to a long-term residence permit?

You must have held a residence permit in Turkey continuously for at least 8 years. Not posing a threat to public order or public security, and meeting certain social assistance conditions are also among the requirements.
